Do you go to the gym, if so, how often?

I'm considering starting the gym to help improve my energy levels during the day. Going to the gym and getting into shape is something I've always wanted to do but low self-confidence and sheer laziness has always stopped me.
I'm hoping someone could provide me with some advice on how to get started and slowly build my self-confidence at the gym. What should I do to improve my physical health and fitness levels? How often should I go to begin with?
